Cranial Sacral Therapy
ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands on, whole body method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system, which may have a positive impact on nearly every system of the body. This physiological body system is made up of a compartment formed by the dura mater membrane, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contained within the membrane, and the system that regulates the flow of the CSF including the skull, face, and mouth, extending down to the sacrum and coccyx. CST releases restrictions in this system to enhance central nervous system performance and allow the body to self correct and self heal and often produces extraordinary results.
CST enhances the body’s natural healing processes to improve the operation of the nervous system and dissipates the negative effects of stress, enhances health, and strengthens the resistance to disease. The craniosacral system is vital as it influences the performance of the brain and spinal cord and any imbalance or restriction in the system could potentially cause sensory or motor neurological problems such as chronic pain, fatigue, emotional difficulties, immune disorders, and stress related disorders to name a few.
While strengthening the body’s natural healing processes to bolster resistance to disease, it has also proven effective in aiding individuals with a wide range of medical challenges associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
• Migraines
• Neck and Back Pain
• Fibromyalgia
• Chronic Fatigue
• TMJ Syndrome
• Motor Coordination Impairments
• Autism
• Learning Disabilities
• Emotional Difficulties
• Stress Related Problems
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
• ADHD and many others
WHAT TO EXPECT
A typical session lasts from 60-75 minutes and takes place in a quiet, private setting. As a client, you remain fully clothed as you recline on a treatment table. The practitioner will stand or sit at various places of your head, torso, or feet throughout the session, releasing restrictions as needed using no more than the weight of a nickel. At times your practitioner may support your limbs to help release tension.
What you experience is highly individual. Most people say they feel deeply relaxed while others feel an unwinding sensation as the body release tension. Some people liken the process to a deep meditation. You may even recall circumstances surrounding a past trauma that caused your body stress. This is perfectly normal and helps the body reverse the dysfunction and return to health.
Because each individual response to CST is so unique, the number of sessions to resolve an issue varies widely. While one session may give you the relief you need, a minimum of three sessions is usually recommended.
